Red Deer Rutting Season

From September to November, the echoes of the Red Deer rutting season can be heard throughout Killarney National Park. The season has become renowned, as people travel to Killarney to see wildlife’s great spectacle.  The clashing of antlers is underway, after a summer of friendship, as stags fight for their females.

Walking tours are available which guide onlookers through the natural habitat. Stags can be seen in great battle, locking antlers and fighting as they bellow their mating call. The wild Killarney Deer have been native to the area for over six thousand years.

A common area for herds is in the Muckross House area of the park, only a short stroll from the hotel. Maps are provided at our Guest Relations Desk. Our concierge will happily mark the best locations to spot Killarney’s famous Red Deer.
