In August 2025 the hotel was recognised for its efforts in energy management and carbon reduction with ISO 50001 certification. This is internationally recognised standard that provides a comprehensive framework for organisations to establish, implement, maintain, and continually improve energy performance. It focuses on enhancing energy efficiency, optimising usage, reducing consumption, and ultimately lowering environmental impact. This milestone on our sustainability journey underscores our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and maximising the environmental impact of our operations as we continue to drive more meaningful progress towards a more sustainable future.

To this end we Muckross Park Hotel & Spa are committed to taking the following action;

  • To achieve sound environmental practices across our entire operation and achieve third-party environmental certification recognition.
  • To review and update this Policy annually and report on our progress in achieving our Goals and Targets.
  • To create an Environmental Action Plan setting out our planned actions – current and future.
  • To comply fully with all relevant environmental legislation.
  • To minimise our waste with a specific focus on Food, Single Use Plastics and Landfill.
  • To monitor and reduce our water consumption.
  • To Reduce, Reuse & Recycle the resources consumed by our business wherever practical.
  • To develop and implement a Green Purchasing Policy that actively favours local and responsibly sourced goods and services.
  • To invite our customers, suppliers and contractors to participate in our efforts to protect the environment.
  • To provide all employees with the training and resources required to meet our objectives.
  • To openly communicate our policies and practices to interested parties.
  • To monitor and record our environmental impacts on a regular basis, develop KPI’s and compare our performance with our policies, objectives and targets.

Energy

To reduce our Energy consumption by 30% in 2025 over 2019 and reduce Carbon Emissions by 450 Tonnes

Water

To reduce consumption of Mains Water by 40% in 2025 over 2019 which will be the equivalent of 12,000 cubic meters or 12,000,000 litres of water

Waste

To reduce the waste we send to landfill by 25 Tonnes by 2025 over 2019

Killarney Coffee Cup Initiative

At Muckross Park Hotel & Spa, we deeply value our local environment and the proximity of Killarney National Park on our doorstep– an esteemed UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. In line with our dedication to sustainability, we have taken part in the Killarney Coffee Cup Project—which has been designed to combat the issue of single-use coffee cup waste within the local environment. This initiative serves as a testament to our unwavering commitment to creating a cleaner and greener planet.

Green Purchasing

To engage with our suppliers to reduce packaging by 5% over 2021
To increase usage of recycled paper products to 75% of all paper/cardboard purchased

Community Social Responsibility

To support a local school in their Green Flag Environmental Activities
To engage in a local “Clean Up” at least once a year in conjunction with the Tidy Towns Competition
To continue to engage with Down syndrome Ireland

Through our green purchasing policy, we aim to achieve zero pollution, food waste reduction, digital transformation, innovation, and green transformation.
Our policy is based on the foundation of achieving a successful sustainability growth rate (SGR), following circular economy principles.
We believe that responsible green procurement choices and compliance can contribute to a greener future for our hotel group, the communities we serve, and the team we lead.

Irish Supplier Product Information

At Muckross Park Hotel & Spa local suppliers are a very important criteria for our food culinary program and feature in some way on all of our menus. We choose quality Irish product wherever we can. Product is sourced as close to our door as possible. We love nothing more than developing the relationships with local growers, craftsmen and companies that support Irish foods first.

Various Irish products feature on our Colgan’s Bar, Monk’s Lounge, Yew Tree Restaurant, Breakfast, Wedding, Function & Events and Afternoon Tea Menus.

All of our beef and chicken is 100% Irish.

T. Cronin & Sons 9 High Street, Killarney, Co. Kerry – is a 5th generation local butcher located in Killarney who has cattle herds to supply us with our burgers, beef striploins, stewing beef, chicken and pork.

Star Seafood – Shops in Kenmare & Killarney Co. Kerry – Our seafood is supplied by local Irish fisherman through Star Seafood. Founded in 1974 by Danny McCarthy Snr. Star Seafood provides Muckross Park with Smoked Salmon from their Kenmare plant, Crab is caught in Dingle, Cod, Hake, Turbot and Halibut come from the port of Castletownbere where of the Fishermen and boats that fish for us include the following: The Robyn RJ, Harvest Reaper, Lour des Mers, Albha Rose, Monica 2, Tea Rose, Ownie Padraig and Anders Needs.
